A garage door problem doesn't always mean a full replacement, but knowing the difference saves you from either overpaying for a repair on a door that's done, or replacing a door that just needed one part fixed. Here's how to tell which situation you're in.
Repair usually covers it if:
1. The door is loud but moves smoothly. Grinding or squeaking with no sticking or jerking is almost always worn rollers or hinges needing lubrication or replacement — a low-cost fix.
2. One spring looks worse than the other. Torsion springs are sold and replaced in pairs when one shows wear, but if the door frame, panels, and track are all in good shape, spring replacement restores the door to full function.
3. The opener runs but the door won't respond correctly. Openers have their own set of wear parts — drive gear, sensors, logic board — that can be repaired or swapped without touching the door itself.
4. A single panel is dented or has a hole, but the rest of the door is straight and the track is undamaged. Individual panels can often be replaced without redoing the whole door.
5. The door reverses unexpectedly or the safety sensors misalign after a bump. This is a sensor alignment fix, not a door problem.
Replacement is the better call if:
1. The door is visibly out of square or warped — you can see daylight gaps that change shape as the door moves. Wood and older steel doors do this with age and moisture exposure; no adjustment fixes a warped panel structure.
2. You're repairing the same section repeatedly. If a track, spring, or panel has already been fixed more than once in a short span, the door's underlying hardware is likely at the end of its service life.
3. The insulation and weatherstripping are failing across the whole door, not just one seal — visible daylight along multiple edges, or a door that's noticeably colder to the touch than it should be. At that point a repair papers over an aging door rather than solving it.
